Rules to Prevent Menstruation During Hajj

For many women, especially because some essential rituals, such as Tawaf, require a state of purity. Islam is a religion of ease and mercy, and it provides clear guidance for women in every situation, including menstruation during Hajj.

Can Women Use Medication to Delay Menstruation During Hajj?

Islamic Ruling

Many scholars allow women to use pills or hormonal medication to delay menstruation during Hajj, provided that:

  • The medication does not cause harm
  • It is taken under proper medical supervision
  • It does not lead to serious health risks or side effects

This permission is based on the Islamic principle:
“There should be neither harm nor reciprocating harm.”

If the medication is medically safe, there is no sin in using it to help complete Hajj rituals, especially Tawaf al-Ifadah.

Difference of Scholarly Opinion

Some scholars advise against interfering with the natural cycle unless truly necessary, while others permit it due to practical reasons such as:

  • Limited Hajj days
  • Fixed visa duration
  • Difficulty extending the stay

Using pills is permissible, but not obligatory, and should only be done after:

  • Consulting a qualified doctor
  • Understanding possible side effects
  • Seeking scholarly guidance if unsure

Medical Advice (Very Important)

Women should start consultation at least 1-2 months before Hajj. One should not take pills or medications suddenly or without consultation. Some women may experience spotting, irregular bleeding or fatigue. If adverse effects occur, women should stop medication and prioritise health.

Islam does not require a woman to harm her body to complete rituals.

Rulings for Menstruating Women During Hajj

Menstruation does not invalidate Hajj. A woman in her menses may perform all Hajj rituals except Tawaf and Salah.

1. Assuming Ihram While Menstruating

If a woman is menstruating:

  • She can assume Ihram
  • Perform ghusl (recommended) or wudu
  • Make intention (niyyah) for Hajj
  • Recite Talbiyah

She should not pray the two rak‘ahs of Ihram.

2. Menstruation After Entering Ihram

If menstruation begins after Ihram:

  • Ihram remains valid
  • Hajj continues normally
  • There is no penalty or expiation

3. Restrictions During Menstruation

While menstruating, a woman should:

  • Avoid Tawaf
  • Avoid Salah
  • Avoid touching or reciting the Qur’an directly (some scholars allow dhikr-based recitation)

4. Tawaf After Purification

Once menstruation ends:

  • Perform ghusl
  • Enter Masjid al-Haram
  • Complete Tawaf al-Ifadah
  • Complete remaining rites

This Tawaf can be delayed until purification without affecting the validity of Hajj.

Important Reminder

The Mother of the Believers Aisha (RA) menstruated during Hajj, and the Prophet ﷺ comforted her saying:
“This is something Allah has decreed for the daughters of Adam.”
(Bukhari & Muslim)

This hadith establishes that menstruation:

  • Is natural
  • Is not a deficiency in faith
  • Does not reduce the reward of Hajj
