Ihram Rules and Regulations

Ihram is more than the two pieces of white clothing; it is a sacred state a pilgrim enters before beginning the rituals of Hajj. Once a pilgrim enters the state of Ihram, certain rules, prohibitions, and ethical responsibilities become binding. Following the Ihram rules and regulations is essential for the validity and acceptance of Hajj.

What Is Ihram?

Ihram refers to:

  • A spiritual state of consecration, and
  • The specific garments worn by pilgrims while performing Hajj

A pilgrim enters Ihram after making an intention (niyyah) and reciting the Talbiyah, from the prescribed Meeqat or before it.

Obligations Upon Entering Ihram

Once a pilgrim enters the state of Ihram, he/she must:

  • Maintain the state of Ihram until its lawful completion
  • Avoid all prohibited actions
  • Observe patience, humility, and good conduct
  • Follow all rules related to dress, behavior, and worship

Breaking the Ihram rules knowingly may require fidyah (compensation) or may affect the validity of Hajj.

Ihram Dress Code

For Men

  • Two unstitched white cloths:
    1. One covering the lower body (izar)
    2. One covering the upper body (rida)
  • Footwear must leave the ankles and tops of feet exposed
  • No stitched garments, socks, or head coverings

For Women

There is no specific clothing for women for the Ihram. The dress code for women involves:

  • Modest, loose-fitting clothing that covers the body
  • Face and hands must remain uncovered
  • No specific color requirement
  • Clothing should not be decorative or perfumed
Prohibited Actions During Ihram

Once Ihram is assumed, the following actions are strictly prohibited.

  • Cutting or shaving hair
  • Trimming nails
  • Using scented soaps, lotions, or fragrances
  • Applying perfume to the body or clothes
  • Men wearing stitched or tailored clothing
  • Covering the head (for men)
  • Wearing gloves or a face covering (for women)
  • Sexual relations
  • Romantic or intimate behaviour
  • Hunting land animals
  • Causing harm to animals unnecessarily
  • Arguments, fighting, or abusive language
  • Acts of disobedience or sinful behaviour

“There is to be no sexual relations, no disobedience, and no disputing during Hajj.” (Qur’an 2:197)

Violations and Compensation (Fidyah)

If a pilgrim:

  • Violates the Ihram rules unintentionally, or
  • Is forced due to illness or necessity

Then fidyah may be required, which can include:

  • Feeding the poor
  • Fasting
  • Offering a sacrifice

Scholarly guidance should be sought in such cases.
