Things To Do During Hajj

Many Muslims believe that Hajj is an obligatory journey that includes a series of physical rituals. But in reality, Hajj is a deeply spiritual journey that requires awareness, patience and conscious ibadah. Alongside the obligatory rituals, many recommended acts help gain immense rewards and barakah.

Let’s explore the things pilgrims can do during Hajj.

Purify Intention (Niyyah)

One of the most important things pilgrims should do during Hajj is to constantly renew their intention. They should:

  • Perform every act and rite solely for the pleasure of Allah
  • Avoid arguments, showing off or seeking praise
  • Remember that Hajj is a sacred spiritual journey of a lifetime, not for tourism

A sincere intention transforms physical hardship into spiritual elevation.

Observe The Obligatory Rituals With Care

Pilgrims must give priority to the obligatory and essential acts of Hajj, ensuring they are completed correctly and on time:

  • Assuming Ihram from the correct Miqat
  • Standing at Arafah
  • Tawaf al-Ifadah
  • Sa’i between Safa and Marwah
  • Stoning the Jamarat
  • Shaving or trimming the hair

These acts form the foundation of a valid Hajj.

Engage In Constant Dhikr (Remembrance Of Allah)

Hajj is a profound opportunity to remember, praise and strengthen your connection with Allah (SWT). During Hajj, there are moments of delays and pauses, which pilgrims can use to engage in Dhikr.

Pilgrims are encouraged to:

  • Recite Talbiyah frequently until stoning Jamrat al-Aqabah
  • Say SubhanAllah, Alhamdulillah, Allahu Akbar
  • Make Istighfar (seeking forgiveness)
  • Send blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ

Make Abundant Du‘a (Supplication)

Hajj is a sacred pilgrimage which helps to renew our intention and repentance, and it is also among the greatest opportunities for accepted du’a.

Especially recommended times:

  • Day of Arafah (the most powerful time for supplication)
  • After obligatory prayers
  • During Tawaf
  • Between Safa and Marwah
  • In Muzdalifah
  • After stoning the Jamarat

Make du‘a for yourself, your family, the Ummah, and the Hereafter.

Observe Patience and Good Character

Patience is among the core acts of worship during Hajj. The journey of Hajj is challenging, and it continuously tests the patience and character of pilgrims through unexpected challenges. Pilgrims should:

  • Control anger and avoid arguments
  • Be gentle with fellow pilgrims
  • Forgive others easily
  • Avoid foul speech and disputes

Allah links the acceptance of Hajj with upright behaviour.

Follow The Sunnah Of The Prophet (PBUH)

Hajj offers you endless opportunities to follow the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Wherever possible, pilgrims should perform rituals in accordance with the Sunnah:

  • Begin Tawaf from the Black Stone
  • Walk calmly and avoid pushing
  • Perform Sa’i as prescribed
  • Follow the prophetic guidance in Mina, Arafah, and Muzdalifah

Following the Sunnah enhances both correctness and reward.

Respect Sacred Places and Fellow Pilgrims

Every year, millions of believers embark on the Hajj journey. The sacred pilgrimage brings together millions of Muslims from diverse backgrounds. Pilgrims should:

  • Respect sacred sites
  • Avoid overcrowding or dangerous behaviour
  • Assist the elderly and vulnerable
  • Follow official instructions and safety guidelines

Mutual respect is an act of worship in itself.

Reflect, Repent, and Transform

Hajj is a chance for spiritual rebirth.
Pilgrims should:

  • Reflect on past actions
  • Make sincere repentance
  • Resolve to improve prayer, character, and faith
  • Return with a commitment to live as a better Muslim

A successful Hajj leaves a lasting change beyond Makkah.
